Tracking snails at night with a uv torch

Garden snail

We collected some garden snails and painted them with fluorescent paint. We put them in the middle of the lawn and recorded how far each went over a period of 5 hours or so. Snails are nocturnal, so they are most active at night. We released them at dusk and used a uv torch to find them at night.

We have been checking for them each night. One or two are coming back regularly. The really fast one hasn’t been seen since the first night.

This is a short film we made of our experiment.
